Mentor Job Description

Volunteer Category: Mentor

Commitment Time:

  • One hour a week for the duration of the school year.
  • Attend two development workshops during the year
  • Attend one family event

Areas of Involvement: Commitment to developing supportive relationship with one program participant (student between grades 6 and 12) need academic and/or social assistance.

Qualifications:

  • Sincere desire to be personally involved with another person to help him or her achieve personal and academic goals.
  • Ability to communicate with youth openly and non-judgmentally;
  • Strong listening skills.
  • Ability to establish a relationship based on equal responsibility and respect.
  • Interest in needs and concerns of persons with internal and external barriers to academic and social success.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives.
  • Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural or racial backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Make a minimum one-year commitment to developing and maintaining a mentor relationship with a youth.
  • Attend mentor orientation and training session before meeting mentee.
  • Attend ongoing mentor training and support sessions (must attend two per year).
  • Assist mentee in solving school-related and other problems that interfere with mentee’s success at school.
  • Attend extra curricular activities with mentee (optional).
  • Attend a minimum of one family event during the year.

Reaching Out Mentoring staff will be responsible for creating activities in the Mentor Center to engage the mentor pair. We will communicate with mentors and mentees when one is unable to attend the scheduled meeting time and inform mentors of special events either related to school or the mentoring program. To make it easier for the matched pair, they will meet the same day and same time each week.
